After 12 years, I was longing to revisit New York and see the skyline, the museums and to enjoy the city vibe! A very invigorating, if exhausting, trip that included touching base with one of my favourite paintings, Matisse’s The Piano Lesson.

I have seen this painting three times now and still it intrigues and challenges, both visually and intellectually. Adjacent in the same gallery at MoMA is The Moroccans by Matisse, and recognising its influence in that the artists that followed; Motherwell, Diebenkorn, Keith Vaughan, William Scott and Sean Scully to name but a few.

From the window of the museum, seeing the grand alongside the utilitarian, the new next to the old. Thank you New York for the crazy visuals and the fast pace – the perfect counterbalance to everyday life in rural Wales!
